Abbey Lofts

384 Sunnyside Avenue, Toronto  ·  Near Sunnyside & Marmaduke
High Park / Roncesvalles  ·  Est. 1911

A limestone Methodist church by William George Burns, finished in 1911 at Sunnyside and Marmaduke, with a 90-foot battlemented tower. Later Howard Park United and then an Italian Pentecostal church, it was converted in 2008 by Taffycroft with ERA Architects into 24 lofts of 1,000 to 3,000 square feet.

History of Abbey Lofts

The church was built in 1911 for a Methodist congregation, designed by William George Burns in the Medieval Revival style: walls of light-grey limestone quarried in St. Marys, Ontario, and a 90-foot square tower with mock battlements, like a fortified church, around a great arched stained-glass window.

When the Methodists joined the United Church of Canada in 1925 it became Howard Park United Church. The United congregation left in 1970 and the building was bought by Italian evangelicals, whose Howard Street Pentecostal Church moved to a new building in Vaughan in 2003, selling to the developers.

Taffycroft converted it in 2008 with ERA Architects, keeping as much of the 1911 interior as they could: the limestone walls, the stained-glass arches, the church doors and the 17-foot wood-vaulted ceilings. The 24 lofts run from about 1,000 to 3,000 square feet; most ground-floor units have sunken living rooms and terraces framed by Gothic arches, and one keeps three of the original church doors opening onto a 30-foot terrace. It sits on a quiet residential street across from Howard Public School, two blocks from High Park.
