The Ideal Bread Company factory at Dovercourt and Argyle, a five-storey Edwardian Classical bakery designed by Sydney Comber and built in 1919, with its corner entrance and clock still in place. Bread was baked here until 1957; heritage-designated in 2003 and converted in 2007 into 86 lofts.
The Ideal Bread Company was founded in 1909 by the brothers William and Charles Carruthers and Robert McMullen. In 1919 they tore down the small 1873 building on the corner and had the architect Sydney Comber design a new steel and concrete factory clad in red brick, built by R.G. Kirby and Son, with additions in 1923 and 1933. A photo from about 1923 shows bread wagons and trucks lined up outside, and bakers pulling loaves from gas-fired travelling ovens.
Ideal merged with Wonder Bakeries in 1938, and baking here stopped in 1957. The building had a series of other uses until the City designated it under the Ontario Heritage Act in 2003; it is still the tallest building in the neighbourhood.
After delays over the heritage work, the conversion was finished in 2007. The corner bakery entrance is still the front door, and the clock was kept. The 86 lofts include one-bedrooms of about 500 to 600 square feet, two-bedrooms from about 700 to over 1,000, mezzanine units and ground-floor units with front yards; the two-storey penthouses are set back from the facade, with roof decks and city views.
“Built in 1873.” That was the small building Ideal tore down; this factory dates from 1919.
