A 1915 brick and timber building on Wellington West, built on spec by Yolles & Rotenberg and first leased to the Butterick Publishing Company, the sewing-pattern giant. Converted in 2001 into 11 enormous lofts, two to a floor, from about 4,000 to over 6,000 square feet.
Leon Yolles, raised in the Ward, practised as an architect from 1910 to 1916, one of the first Jewish architects in Ontario, before he and Kenneth Rotenberg went into business as Yolles & Rotenberg, one of Toronto's earliest property developers. They built 468 Wellington in 1915 to rent out, and went on to projects like the Hobberlin Building on Adelaide and the Park Plaza Hotel.
The first tenant was the Butterick Publishing Company. Ebenezer Butterick had started the business in the 1860s selling the first graded sewing patterns, followed by magazines of patterns and fashion news, including The Delineator in 1873, and by 1876 it sold patterns from Paris to Berlin through 100 branch offices and 1,000 agencies across the United States and Canada. Butterick later had a factory in Toronto.
The building was converted in 2001 into just 11 lofts, two to a floor, each with private elevator access, three walls of windows, 14-foot ceilings, wood beams and exposed brick, from about 4,000 to more than 6,000 square feet; the biggest is said to be three floors with five fireplaces. The original staircase and elevator are still in the lobby, and a top floor was added. They are some of the largest condos in Toronto.
