A century-old brick garment factory west of Bathurst and north of College, built in sections over the years, where workers sewed uniforms. Converted in 1996 into 13 two-storey townhouse lofts of about 1,500 to 2,400 square feet along a 275-foot mews from Clinton to Jersey Avenue.
The brick factory at 200 Clinton Street is about a century old and was built in sections over many years. It belonged to the neighbourhood's garment trade, and according to the Globe and Mail its workers were making uniforms, not buttons.
Sales for a conversion began around 1993, and it was finished in 1996 as 13 townhouse-style lofts, each on two floors, with exposed brick and the original fir beams and trim. They run from about 1,500 to 2,400 square feet, huge for Toronto, and open onto a private mews that runs 275 feet through the block from Clinton Street to Jersey Avenue.
The name comes from a local story that children were paid a penny for each button they picked up off the factory floor. Nobody has found a record of buttons being made here.
