Claremont Lofts

62 Claremont Street, Toronto  ·  Near Queen W & Bathurst
Trinity-Bellwoods  ·  Est. 1931

A red-brick Art Deco hall on Claremont Street, announced in 1929 as the Polish Association of Toronto's new home and designed by James M. Cowan, later the Portuguese Casa do Benfica. Converted in 1999 into 8 large multi-level lofts of about 2,100 square feet, with ceilings up to 24 feet, roof terraces and private garages.

History of Claremont Lofts

The Toronto Star announced in October 1929 that the Polish Association of Toronto would build a new hall here, designed by James M. Cowan, an architect who did a great deal of work for the Catholic Church in Toronto and whose best-known building is the neo-classical front of St. Vincent de Paul Church on Roncesvalles. It probably opened around 1931, and in 1951 the University of Toronto Polish Students' Club gave this as its address.

Later the hall changed hands, and communities: a 1997 MLS listing photo shows “CASA DO BENFICA” in big red letters across the front. The Portuguese club, Benfica House of Toronto, sold the building that year for $596,000.

It was converted in 1999 into 8 lofts, each about 2,100 to 2,200 square feet with two or three bedrooms, ceilings up to 24 feet, skylights and stairs up to a private roof terrace; one even has a glass floor in the bedroom. They have private garages off the lane and there is a guest suite. They almost never come up for sale.

Stories you'll hear

The building is usually said to have been built in 1931 as the Casa do Benfica, a Portuguese banquet hall. It was built for the Polish Association; Benfica came decades later.
