The Gothic Sunday school wing of Dovercourt Road Presbyterian Church, added by Simpson & Young around 1910 beside William R. Gregg's 1905 church near Bloor and Dovercourt. Converted by Bob Mitchell in 1990 into 21 lofts, keeping the stone turrets, leaded Gothic windows and the old gym's hardwood floor.

History of Hepbourne Hall Lofts

Dovercourt Road Presbyterian began as a mission of Chalmers Church and built its church at Hepbourne and Dovercourt in 1905, designed by William R. Gregg, who trained with Smith & Gemmell and also designed Bloor Street United. Simpson & Young added the Sunday school wing soon after: it isn't on the 1910 Goad's map but is on the 1913 one. Henry Simpson also designed the Parisian Laundry building at King and Portland.

The congregation merged with St. Paul's in 1968 as Dovercourt–St. Paul's, and with Dufferin Street Presbyterian in 1993 as St. Paul's. The church itself is now used by a Portuguese Presbyterian congregation.

Bob Mitchell converted the Sunday school in 1990, early in Toronto's loft era, into 21 lofts of one to three storeys, from about 575 to 2,200 square feet. The stone turrets and Gothic leaded windows were restored, several units have the old gym's hardwood, cleaned, sanded and relaid, and some have sunken living rooms, raised bedrooms or private terraces.

Stories you'll hear

The 1940s Toronto Maple Leafs are said to have trained in the church gym in the off-season, and Conn Smythe to have been a church elder who taught Sunday school here. It's a much-loved story, but we haven't found a record of it.
