A brick knitting mill on Richmond West near Bathurst, home by 1950 to National Knitting Mills, makers of Huckleberry Finn boys' wear. Bob Mitchell joined its two buildings and converted them in 1996 into 20 lofts with concrete walls between units, wood-burning fireplaces and ceilings up to 20 feet.
Semi-detached houses stood on this stretch of Richmond in 1924. By 1950 the knitting mill was here: a 1950 newspaper report names National Knitting Mills as the neighbour of 670 Richmond, the company employed more than 50 people in 1951, and in 1959 it registered the trademark “Huckleberry Finn” for boys' sweaters, shirts, socks and jackets made at 676 Richmond Street West. Later directories list Universal Knitting and a furniture maker, Gold Crest Products, here.
The building was offered for sale on and off from 1989 to 1991, and in 1996 Bob Mitchell converted it, blending what had been two buildings into one. He put concrete walls between the lofts, which makes this one of the quietest loft buildings in Toronto. The 20 lofts run from about 750 to over 2,000 square feet, each with a wood-burning fireplace, hardwood floors, 10- to 16-foot ceilings, some reaching 20, exposed brick and steel, and a parking space. The next year Mitchell converted the old Decca Records building next door as Industrial Revolution II.
