Two former school buildings back to back between Baldwin and Nassau Streets in Kensington Market, the Nassau building a 1920s school and later a George Brown College campus. Converted by Context Development in 1999 and 2000 into about 145 lofts with 10- to 22-foot ceilings.
Kensington Market grew out of the estate of Colonel George Taylor Denison, who bought 156 acres here in 1815; the land was split into lots from 1854 for English, Irish and Scottish working families, and in the early 1900s Jewish immigrants from Europe turned it into a market.
The building on Nassau Street was a school in the 1920s and later a campus of George Brown College, and its neighbour behind it on Baldwin Street was also used by schools. In 1999 Context Development, which later did the Tip Top and Loretto conversions, turned the buildings into lofts, finished in 2000.
The roughly 145 lofts run from about 520 to over 1,700 square feet, with 10- to 22-foot ceilings, big windows, concrete ceilings, mezzanines and hardwood, concrete or bamboo floors. There is a courtyard with a barbecue and a book exchange, and the market is right outside.
