A 1951 Toronto Hydro office and storage building at the foot of Casa Loma, where wire was stored, converted by Burnac in 2008 and 2009 into 211 lofts. The architect Paul Northgrave added two storeys and Art Deco touches; ceilings run 10 to 14 feet.
Toronto Hydro built this brick and concrete office and storage building in 1951, just north of Dupont and Spadina below the Casa Loma escarpment. For more than half a century it held the utility's bundles of wire and other supplies.
Burnac Corporation, the developer behind the Tiffany & Co. building on Bloor, took it on in the 2000s. Rebuilding the old Hydro building was costly, but it was the only way to keep its original columns, tall ceilings, stairwells and banisters. The architect Paul Northgrave of Northgrave Architects added two storeys on top and gave the building Art Deco details, and II BY IV Design did the interiors. The conversion was finished in 2008 and 2009.
There are 211 lofts with 10- to 14-foot ceilings, windows up to 12 feet tall, exposed columns and ducts and painted concrete ceilings, a mix of true hard lofts and newer soft lofts in the addition, many with private outdoor space. Unusually for a loft, it has a full club: 24-hour concierge, gym with steam rooms, theatre, party room, and a roof terrace with BBQs looking straight at Casa Loma, plus a landscaped courtyard.
Madison Lofts is at 380 MacPherson Avenue, Toronto, in The Annex / Summerhill.
