Summerhill  ·  Est. 1956

The 1956 headquarters of the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario on Price Street in Summerhill, a four-storey Georgian-style building inside the South Rosedale heritage district. The nurses moved to University Avenue in 1995, and it was converted by 1996 into 20 lofts, each with its own floor plan.

History of Nursing Lofts

Ontario's nurses first organized in 1904 as the Graduate Nurses' Association of Ontario, which pushed through the Nurses Registration Act of 1922 and became the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario in 1925. In the 1930s it set standards for nursing schools, closing 37 small schools that didn't meet them, and in 1951 the province gave it responsibility for registering nurses.

Soon after, in 1956, the RNAO built this four-storey headquarters on Price Street, with a simple Georgian front that fits the neighbourhood. The nurses stayed almost 40 years before moving to 438 University Avenue in 1995. The building is part of the South Rosedale Heritage Conservation District.

33 Price Street Developments converted it in 1995 and 1996 into 20 lofts, from about 470 to 1,458 square feet, each with its own layout. They have 9-foot ceilings, limestone floors, marble sills and French doors; some are two storeys with a fireplace and skylight, lower units have terraces and end units small balconies. There's surface parking and lockers, and Summerhill station is around the corner.
