Forest Hill / Cedarvale  ·  Est. c. 1915

Cedarvale Mansions, a grand five-storey apartment house of about 1915 on the edge of the Cedarvale Ravine, where Ernest Hemingway lived in 1923–24 while reporting for the Toronto Star. A co-op from 1985 and a condominium named The Hemingway since 2002, with 20 large suites.

History of The Hemingway

The building isn't on the 1913 Goad's fire insurance map but is in the 1916 city directory, so it went up around 1914 or 1915, as Cedarvale Mansions, one of Toronto's early luxury apartment houses. Bathurst Street north of here was a dirt track down into the ravine until the bridge was built in the 1920s. When it changed hands in 1926 a newspaper called it “one of the most up-to-date and beautiful apartment houses in the district”.

Ernest Hemingway, who first came to Toronto in 1920 and wrote for the Toronto Star, came back with his wife Hadley in 1923 and rented an apartment here; their son John was born in Toronto that October. Hemingway clashed with the Star's city editor, Harry Hindmarsh, and the family left for Paris early in 1924. A plaque at the front door marks his stay.

The building became a co-operative, Bathurst Forest Hill Place Apartments, in 1985, and was turned into a condominium in 2002 and named The Hemingway. Its 20 suites, four to a floor, are about 1,075 to 1,350 square feet with two or three bedrooms, sunrooms at the back, hot-water radiators and surface parking for every unit behind the building.
