History of Toy Factory Lofts

Fire insurance maps show factory buildings on this corner, then Pacific Avenue, by 1893. Around 1910 the street became Hanna Avenue and the Hinde & Dauch Paper Company of Sandusky, Ohio, moved in. Walk Liberty dates its building here to 1912, and by 1924 the complex had grown to roughly the shape it has today. Hinde & Dauch made corrugated paper boxes, and its old power plant still stands across the parking lot at Hanna and Snooker, also on the City's heritage list.

For the second half of the century the complex belonged to Irwin Toy, the Toronto toy company behind table hockey games, sports balls and Frisbees, which also brought licensed toys like Star Wars figures to Canada. Irwin left in the early 2000s.

Between 2005 and 2008 the buildings were renovated and expanded into lofts; condos.ca credits Lanterra Developments. The oldest parts have brick walls several feet thick, steel ceiling beams and solid Douglas fir posts, and a three-storey addition on the triangular wing holds newer soft-loft units. Lofts run from just under 700 to just over 3,000 square feet, the floor plans are named after games, and the building is known for unusually low condo fees. 43 Hanna was added to the City's inventory of heritage properties in 2004.
