History of Warehouse Lofts

Lawrence J. McGuinness, born in Port Hope in 1882, started in the wholesale liquor business in Toronto in 1905. During Prohibition he and his partner Harry Hatch ran liquor across Lake Ontario into the United States and made a fortune; in 1927 he built the biggest house on the Mimico waterfront, a 21-room Tudor mansion still standing at 2603 Lake Shore Boulevard West. In the 1920s McGuinness and the Hatch brothers bought Gooderham and Worts, and in 1933 he sold out and started his own company.

L.J. McGuinness Distillers opened its Mimico plant here in 1938, distilling, blending, bottling and warehousing whisky and other spirits; Silk Tassel Canadian whisky and Polar Ice vodka are the brands still on shelves. His son ran the business from 1951, it was sold to Standard Brands in the 1970s and changed hands again in 1987, and the plant closed in 1988. Nearly all of it was demolished in 1989.

Camrost Felcorp built Mystic Pointe, a 16-acre master-planned community, on the distillery lands from 1992. The Warehouse Lofts, first marketed as the SkyLofts, were finished in 1999 in two buildings with two condo corporations: 300 Manitoba, the four-storey block under the roof garden, and 250 Manitoba, the eight-storey L-shape that wraps around it. Most lofts are two storeys with 17-foot ceilings and big windows, the ground floor has shops, and the rooftop garden looks out over the lake.

Stories you'll hear

“The lofts are in the old distillery warehouse.” That's how they're usually sold. The old McGuinness warehouse is part of the building, but according to the loft historian Laurin Jeffrey it holds the parking garage, and the lofts are new construction above and around it.
